Circular cable duct successfully implemented at Hoorn rail yard
Technological innovations on and around the railway, such as the installation of signaling systems and communication networks, often require modifications to the existing cable network. Infrastructure redesigns also regularly bring new challenges: cables and conduits must be relocated to make room for expanding tracks, stations, and other facilities.
An essential part of these projects is the underground infrastructure, which ensures the safe and efficient distribution of cabling. An innovative solution within this underground infrastructure is the circular plastic cable duct, which is increasingly playing a central role.
Following its introduction at the end of last year, the circular plastic cable duct has now been installed in the track for the first time. In collaboration with Van Gelder Group, a substantial length of this circular cable duct has been laid at the Hoorn rail yard.
This innovative cable duct not only protects the cables from external influences but also contributes to sustainability. By using recycled materials and a design that allows for reuse, the circular plastic cable duct reduces the ecological footprint and promotes a circular railway infrastructure.
Lightweight, strong, and circular
Initial feedback from the field is positive. Installers especially appreciate the product’s low weight and durability. While concrete cable ducts can sometimes break upon impact or during careless transport, the plastic cable duct is remarkably robust and far easier to handle. The ease with which bends and corners can be cut into the duct is also widely praised.
Thanks to this new cable duct, underground infrastructure projects can be carried out more quickly and efficiently. It is precisely through innovation in ‘standard’ products that we, as a supply chain, can make incremental improvements to production efficiency.
The plastic cable duct meets the requirements set out in SPC00374 V2 and can be produced not only in the KK02 dimensions but also in other specified sizes.
Circular construction in practice
What makes this cable duct particularly special is the origin of its material. More than 98% of the composite is sourced from recycled materials, including old wind turbine blades and protective layers from electric vehicle batteries. In addition, thanks to the smart combination of raw materials and added resin, the cable duct is fully recyclable once it reaches the end of its lifespan.
Robbert van der Schaaf, Product Manager, says: “We are proud that, in addition to sustainability improvements in products such as sleepers and rails, we are also making progress in related focus areas. It’s precisely with examples like these that we demonstrate how sustainability and innovation can go hand in hand.”
