Tailored Logistics for the Renewal of Amsterdam Metro Tracks
Amsterdam is growing, and with it the pressure on urban infrastructure is increasing. The GVB metro network forms the backbone of inter-city transport. The network is heavily used, which makes maintenance and renewal inevitable from time to time. That is why a large-scale renewal of the Amsterdam metro tracks is currently taking place. For this project, we not only supplied the rail products but also supported our client, VolkerRail, with the most suitable logistics solution: carefully coordinated transports of rail materials, contributing to efficient execution within the complex urban environment of Amsterdam.
Transport of Rails for Light Rail
First, the 49E1 rails were loaded onto our OVI train in Hilversum, a specialized means of transport designed for the efficient and safe transport of rails for light rail applications. The OVI train is suitable for rails from a minimum of nine meters to a maximum of 120 meters in length, and is specially deployable for light rail projects. The rails are unloaded on site with a crane on rail lorries: a compact rail vehicle with a hydraulic crane function that makes it possible to position heavy materials directly from the train along the track, ready for installation.
Ballast Transport with Modified Klmos Wagons
In addition to transporting rails, we also ensure that the necessary ballast arrives at its destination. For this purpose, we deployed 15 Klmos wagons. These wagons were originally developed for standard railway tracks but have been technically modified specifically for use on the GVB metro network. The locomotives have also been adapted for urban deployment at both the front and rear, including a striking yellow livery for even better visibility.
Transport of Sustainable Composite Sleepers
This year and next year, we will not only transport a total of around 10,000 composite sleepers (KLP® Hybrid Polymer Sleeper Type 201) from Lankhorst Engineered Products, but also all the fastening materials required for this work. The sleepers are made from recycled plastic, reinforced with steel, and offer significant advantages over traditional materials. They are lighter than concrete versions, easy to install in the track, and resistant to chemical and weather influences. With a lifespan of at least 50 years and proven performance in complex environments such as tunnels and bridges, they represent a sustainable choice for urban rail infrastructure.
